The World We Want 2015 will bring the priorities of people from every corner of the world to the forefront and help build a collective vision that will be used directly by the United Nations and World Leaders to plan a new development agenda launching in 2015, one that is based on the aspirations of all citizens!
From the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Determined to eliminate extreme poverty and make the right to development a reality for all, world leaders came together in September 2000 under the auspices of the United Nations to adopt the United Nations Millennium Declaration, thereby committing their nations to achieving 8 goals by 2015, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As the 2015 deadline drew closer, it became apparent that although the MDGs had galvanised unprecendented efforts to end poverty, there were numerous gaps in progress within and between countries, the world had vastly changed since 2000, and much more remained to be done to free the world from poverty and ensure lasting peace. At the end of a lengthy process spanning several years and involving millions of people worldwide, world leaders came together at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in September 2015 to adopt 'Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development', another milestone document committing their nations to a new set of time-bound goals with a deadline of 2030: the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
